Making a model of Ötzi the Iceman.

Teacher Petr Jandácek of New Mexico has created his own model of the Iceman. His Iceman has even posed for a few photos, along with Petr, who dresses as Ötzi for performances in front of children:

The Iceman Goes Driving

Petr (who has been an art teacher for 37 years) offers these directions for making an Ötzi model:

  • I used my own face to make a rough "death mask" out of clay. I subsequently used that as a mold to make a face of the Iceman.... also out of clay. When fired it was painted.
  • The torso and legs are made of large and small plastic bottles wired together to make the armature for papier maché. The arms contain branches. The hands and feet are made of bailing wire twisted to give form to fingers and toes. The armature is covered with about 5 or 6 layers of newspaper and paper towels dipped into Stayflo starch. When dry, the whole figure was painted with acrylic paints.
  • The figure is in two pieces put together with Velcro (so he is half the man he used to be). He fits better in the car that way for when I do my presentations to schools or civic groups.
  • If your efforts do not yield similar results, the artists should not be too disappointed. The enjoyment will come from the attempt to create Ötzi and bring him to life again. I trust that these instructions will help.
